Nervousness:
What It Is and How to Overcome It
Nervousness doesn't have a definition that satisfies
psychologists and scientists; it can mean different things to
different people. About the only thing that can be agreed upon
is that many people suffer from it, and it does have symptoms
such as shallow breathing, sweating, elevated blood pressure,
etc. Even with that, there are many thousands and millions of
dollars being made around the world as companies claim to be
able to solve this age old human condition. They all claim to be
able to cure a condition that doesn't have a good definition!
There is no debate about the fact that nervousness, as a
physical symptom, makes a person feel very miserable and
apprehensive. And, there are thousands of people who find it
necessary to seek and learn how to overcome their extreme
nervousness. They all fear that their condition will escalate
into an uncontrollable nightmare if they don't stay in control.
They turn to tranquilizers and the like in order to maintain
equilibrium and to keep their nervousness from growing into an
anxiety or panic attack.
Know The Causes
Learning to control nervousness starts with education on the
causes of that emotion in the first place. For example, low
blood sugar, as well as a deficiency in the body's amount of
magnesium effect a person's susceptibility to certain anxieties.
Also, most people have fears buried in their sub-conscious. A
person who is extremely nervous multiplies a small fear into a
large happening, mostly irrational, but it still is a problem
for that person. Even insufficient levels of vitamins such as
B10 can effect how nervous a person is.
Common Symptoms
Tenseness and insomnia, as well as irritability, are the typical
symptoms of nervousness. Also, being argumentative and ready to
pick a fight, or having "having butterflies in your stomach" are
other symptoms. People who routinely have these type symptoms of
nervousness need to seek ways to cope and overcome their
uncomfortable feelings.
Overcoming Nervousness
Calcium, believe it or not, has been found to aid in overcoming
nervousness. This is because calcium helps to relax the nerves.
Magnesium is another of the body's minerals that is vital to
many functions, including helping the brain to function
normally. Also, remember that alcohol in moderation is very
important for someone prone to nervous episodes. One should
avoid drinking alcohol as alcohol can deplete magnesium levels,
leading to unwanted health symptoms.
You can also overcome nervousness by studying how certain foods
and ingredients effect your magnesium and calcium levels.
Unfortunately for many of us, white flour, pasta, and noodles,
as well as sugar and honey, are all poor food choices in excess.
These foods and ingredients can cause a person to become
agitated and tightly strung, appearing nervous to a casual
observer.
In summary, to overcome nervousness you should start by seeking
to understand the underlying contributors to nervousness. Then
you should be able to identify the many things that can start a
nervous episode, such as nutritional deficiencies and an
unhealthy diet. By correcting your diet, and being vigilant to
stop nervousness before it gets out of control, you can live a
normal life simply and effectively.
And in closing, be sure to keep a positive attitude toward the
condition. It doesn't have to effect your life, unless you let
it do so. Be confident in your abilities to understand, correct,
and control your nervousness.
